Nueva Rodilla y Haciendo La Paz

Queridos Amigos,    Nueva Rodilla y Haciendo La Paz             2 de April 2020
Desde el 22 de enero tengo una nueva rodilla y ahora me estoy recuperando. Lyn estuvo aquí para mi cirugía y me ha estado ayudando enormemente en mi recuperación. Hizo muchas llamadas telefónicas y sugerencias para asegurarse de que la recuperación fuera más fácil y rápida para mí.
Pasé 4 semanas en rehabilitación. Allí, comí mis comidas con 4 pacientes judíos y un presbiteriano. Fue una oportunidad sorprendentemente buena para compartir sobre trabajar por la paz, incluyendo compartir una charla y fotos sobre Colombia y El Salvador y tener muchas buenas conversaciones.
Un hermano judío comentó: "Todos queremos la paz, pero ustedes están haciendo algo al respecto". Irwin, otro judío, leyó mis panfletos de paz y tomó los nombres de todos los libros que uso para mis tiempos de silencio y así poder conseguirlos y leerlos.
Le mostré un mapa de Israel / Palestina y cómo los palestinos controlaban aproximadamente el 95% de la tierra en 1947 y solo el 10% en la actualidad. Él mostró este mapa a Mart, que es judío. Mart respondió: "Oh, eso es solo propaganda. "Irwin respondió:" Puedes llamarlo propaganda, pero es verdad ".
Irwin, de 91 años, enseñó literatura rusa durante 58 años en la Universidad Northwestern aquí en Evanston. Desde 1960 ha visitado Rusia casi todos los años. Él habla y canta en ruso. Es el líder estadounidense de un programa de intercambio de amistad entre Estados Unidos y Rusia.
Irwin también compartió: "Estoy en contra de Bernie porque es socialista. Como socialista, temo que cuando alguien no esté de acuerdo con Bernie sea arrojado al tintineo como lo hacen en Rusia. He visto demasiada represión en Rusia ". Agregó: "Si Mickey Mouse se enfrentara a Trump, votaría por Mickey".
Irwin agregó además: “Crecí siendo parte de cuando Israel empezó su propio estado, no habrá represión contra ningún grupo étnico. Habrá igualdad, justicia, paz y equidad. ¿Cómo sería si alguien se mudara a su vecindario y destruyera su casa y arrestara y / o matara a algunos en su familia? ¡Eso es lo que el gobierno israelí de Netanyahu le está haciendo a los palestinos! Ahora he llegado a ver que no está bien lo que Israel está haciendo hoy. Hay grupos considerables de israelíes que están en contra de lo que está haciendo su gobierno. Algunos de mis mejores amigos son estos Peaceniks en Israel. "
Este tiempo de rehabilitación fue una verdadera revelación para mí, especialmente sobre el judaísmo y Rusia. Fue un regalo especial estar con estas otras personas en rehabilitación.
También escribo para hacerles saber que Mary Hope Stucky falleció el 8 de febrero en Bogotá. Ella con su esposo Gerald comenzó un internado para niños cuyos padres habían sido aislados debido a la lepra en 1946 en Cachipay, Colombia.
El conocido Pacificador Ricardo Esquivia era un estudiante allí a los 10 años. Él dice: "durante más de 60 años han sido una luz para mí".
Otro estudiante, Guillermo Vargas Rincón, se desempeñó como director del Colegio Americano Menno en La Mesa: Ella siempre me dio una cálida bienvenida en mis visitas a Bogotá.
Le sobreviven sus hijos Peter (Leticia), Paul (villancico) y Timothy (Luzdy).
Le precedieron en la muerte su esposo e hija, Judith.
¿Qué están haciendo usted y su familia con respecto al Coronavirus? Estoy aislado, no más que un paso diario a 2 metros de todos. Quien sabe cuando voy a poder regresar a Colombia. Me hace mucha falta verles, mis amigos.
Ore para que el Coronavirus deje de propagarse.

Dear Friends, I have recently finished Peggy Gish’s book An Iraq Journey of Hope and Peace . It brought me to deep prayer at times, helping me to see US soldiers as human beings and breaking down some of my stereotypes of them. It also helped me experience the personal pain of Iraqis who are caught in the war as opposed to hearing statistics in the news. This was peacemaking taking place in my own heart and mind. Peggy’s honesty in sharing her own personal struggle and admitting her own mistakes is challenging to my own peacemaking. Another aspect of this book that was inspiring to me was that when CPTers in Iraq realized they were making a mistake in midst of sharing with Iraqis, they were able at times to change right then and there. This is clear evidence of the Spirit at work. An Army Visit
