Dear Friends, Are you antimilitary? 7/22/10

“Are you antimilitary?” Ask a cornerstone attendee. David answered, Well if the military does things that are what Jesus taught like help others, I am surely not against that, But if they do things that are opposed to Jesus’ teaching, I want to call them to account just like any one else.
Are you anti-American? David reply, “I am an American, how could I be anti-American, how could I be against myself. “These questions led into a very good half hour conversation. One of many good talks we had in our five days at Cornerstone Festival. There 275 people signed up for our email addresses. We have over 2000 on our email list.


Here we are at our booth on left is Rod Orr, my long time companion and helper at Cornerstone, David Fleig who had the above conversation and yours truly. As always it was a very energizing time as we sense the Lord raising up ever more interest in peacemaking as people are getting weary of war. Here I am in a lively conversation with a friend Rick from Iowa. We met several years back at Cornerstone. We look forward to visiting at Cornerstone each year.



I led a seminar on CPT and another on my latest two months in Colombia. At each talk there were many good questions. I was moved when at the latter they prayed for me afterwards.

With most passers by we ask people to pray for justice and peace. I told them God needs our prayers to bring in his kingdom. We told them stories about Cpt that goes with our pictures, and gave out the following pamphlets: A
basic CPT brochure, “Do You Know Enough To Enlist.” To help people think before they sign, and How you can be a Peacemaker explaining how to write all your government representatives with one click of the computer. And asking them to tell there government representatives to stop using our money for destruction and war., because this results in deaths, suicides, broken homes and broken lives. Instead tell them to use it for creating jobs, health care, and education.

A special gift was having a booth next door to this family from Mexico City. Their church is ministering to many Mexicans on the marginal’s of society. We were both were encouraged as we shared about our work with each other. They are a wonderful family.

Hope in Iraq

Dear Friends, I have recently finished Peggy Gish’s book An Iraq Journey of Hope and Peace . It brought me to deep prayer at times, helping me to see US soldiers as human beings and breaking down some of my stereotypes of them. It also helped me experience the personal pain of Iraqis who are caught in the war as opposed to hearing statistics in the news. This was peacemaking taking place in my own heart and mind. Peggy’s honesty in sharing her own personal struggle and admitting her own mistakes is challenging to my own peacemaking. Another aspect of this book that was inspiring to me was that when CPTers in Iraq realized they were making a mistake in midst of sharing with Iraqis, they were able at times to change right then and there. This is clear evidence of the Spirit at work. It also gave me a sense of how God was able to use the seemingly small amount of people, just six or so, to make a significant difference for the good in this horrible situation.            An Incredible Prime Minister     Dear Friends, a hopeful happening,                  Two years ago, Ethiopia was a basket case. The government seemed to be losing control The majority Oromo people were restive under a rule that seemed to rob them of their place. The traditionally powerful Amhara rioted. A state of emergency brought silence on the surface, but underneath the nation seethed. Civil war threatened. A foreigner was killed. Tourism waned. Finally, the prime minister resigned. Colombia Reports

Introduction Letter Jim Fitz is a member of Plow Creek Mennonite Church, in Tiskilwa, Illinois. He works full time in peacemaking, which includes about 3 months a year with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) in Barrancabermeja, (Barranca for short) Colombia. In the Barranca area, CPT there provides protection from the threats to and killing of various armed groups by being a nonviolent presence and witness for about 100 farm families. Jim will be in Barranca area Oct.1- Dec. 22. During the application process for Christian Peacemaker Teams, one of the first things that the CPT interviewer said to Jim, " Do you realize this is a very dangerous situation and do you have a bunch of people who can pray for you?" This gave Jim some hesitation but upon some reflection, he felt that he had a church full of people who would pray for him. He also felt a clear call to this work.
